Introducing Wild Blue Stillness: A Scuba + Yoga Retreat on Belize’s Turneffe Atoll

There's a particular kind of quiet that happens forty feet underwater. The kind where your own breath is the loudest sound in the world, and everything on land — the inbox, the to-do list, the noise — simply isn't there anymore.

That's the feeling we built Wild Blue Stillness around.

The Idea Behind Calm Adventure

We didn't set out to invent a new category of travel. We set out to solve a problem we kept running into ourselves: most adventure trips leave you wrung out, and most wellness retreats don't ask enough of you.

Diving is real adventure. Sinking into deep water for the first time, watching a ray drift past you along the edge of a wall, timing a slow ascent while your computer counts down, none of that gets softer just because you're doing it thoughtfully. But diving and yoga actually share a foundation most people don't think about: breath. Every dive starts with slow and controlled breathing and one long exhale so you can drop down. Not too different from the breathing we do during a yoga class. We're not bolting two unrelated activities together for a catchy retreat description. We're building a week around a skill you're already practicing in the water, and simply extending it onto the mat.

That's the whole idea behind calm adventure. Push hard enough in the water to feel like you did something real. Then actually recover, not collapse into a lounge chair and call it a day, but genuinely restore your body and your nervous system so you can get back in the water tomorrow with something left in the tank. It's not adventure and relaxation as two separate halves of the day. It's an adventure that's built to be sustainable, one dive and one breath at a time.

Where We're Going

From July 17–24, 2027, we're taking a small group of women to Turneffe Atoll, Belize, for a week that pairs serious diving with real stillness.

Turneffe Atoll - Blackbird Caye Resort

Turneffe Atoll is one of Belize's top dive destinations, part of the Belize Barrier Reef system, with walls, channels, and drop-offs that stay with you long after the trip ends. It's also home to the Great Blue Hole, the massive marine sinkhole that's been on every diver's list for decades.

We're not skipping it. It's built into the week.

We chose Blackbird Caye Resort specifically, not just Turneffe Atoll generally. It's a private island, small enough that it never feels like a resort in the generic sense, and it sits close enough to the Great Blue Hole that the excursion is a straightforward boat ride rather than a full travel day tacked onto the trip. That combination —intimate, well-run, and genuinely close to the dive site we built the week around— is what we look for every time we choose a home base for a retreat. If a resort can't offer that, it doesn't matter how nice the rooms are.

What the Week Looks Like

Over seven days, you'll be able to join up to three dives a day through out the week, including a full-day excursion out to the Great Blue Hole. Mornings might start with breathwork before the first dive. Afternoons might close with a slow, grounding yoga practice as the sun drops toward the water. The rhythm is intentional: give it your all in the water, then actually give yourself room to recover, not just physically, but mentally too. (Like any open-water excursion, the Blue Hole day depends on conditions, but it's built into the schedule to happen.)

Leading the yoga and breathwork side of the week is our personal certified instructor whose practice is built for exactly this kind of trip: restorative, grounding, and adaptable to bodies that spent the morning finning against current.

Why the Group Stays Small

Wild Blue Stillness is capped at 10 to 12 women. That's not a marketing number; it's a design choice. A group that size means our dive team can give real attention to every diver, everyone actually gets to know each other, and the week feels personal instead of processed.

Because of that, every guest talks with me directly before reserving a spot. It's a short call, not an interview, just a conversation to make sure this retreat is genuinely the right fit for where you are as a diver, and that both the diving and the yoga feel exciting to you. Every part of the week is part of the experience.

Why I Built Portal Mindful Retreats

I'll be honest: I built this a little selfishly. My own goal is to still be diving well into my 80s, and yoga is a huge part of how I plan to get there — keeping my body mobile, my breathing efficient, my joints happy long after most divers have hung up their fins. These retreats are my attempt to share that philosophy with other women chasing the same thing: decades more diving.
